What is epoxy?

Epoxy is a two-component synthetic resin known for its exceptional strength and resistance to chemicals, abrasion, stains, impacts, and UV rays.

It is poured over concrete in several layers, which dry and harden quickly. These multiple layers provide enhanced protection for heavily trafficked commercial and industrial floors, making them both waterproof and slip-resistant.

Epoxy adheres firmly not only to concrete but also to wood and many other surfaces. The result is a sleek, modern, and glossy finish that instantly upgrades the look of any space.

Epoxy floor or polished concrete?

Unlike epoxy, polished concrete is not covered with a thick coating. The concrete slab itself is sanded and progressively polished until a glossy finish is achieved.

A sealant can then be applied to enhance shine and protection, but the surface remains 100% concrete.

Aesthetically, polished concrete highlights the raw material. Its finish is more natural, with a mirror-like effect depending on the degree of polishing. This option is highly popular in contemporary or industrial-style spaces.

Epoxy floor, on the other hand, creates a protective barrier over the concrete. It is extremely resistant to oils, scratches, and other damage, whereas polished concrete is more vulnerable to stains and corrosive or chemical products since it lacks a thick protective layer.

Epoxy also offers greater customization: you can choose from various colors, finishes, metallic effects, opaque or transparent looks, and decorative flakes. The result is a modern, uniform, and exceptionally clean surface.

Polished concrete tends to be slightly more expensive to install initially, as the polishing process is long and technical, but the surface maintains its beauty for more than 30 years. Epoxy flooring lasts nearly as long—up to 25 years.
